Locked in the Freezer? You’re Probably in a Movie
Hollywood, let’s remember, is not reality. In real life, it would be unusual for you (or anyone else) to get locked inside your walk-in cooler, as long as the door latch and the electronic components are in good working order. But moviemakers still insist on locking characters inside freezers to make things more dramatic. Here are some examples.
– “Freezer” (2014) Yes, the entire plot of this film features Dylan McDermott mysteriously trapped inside a freezer, supposedly having something to do with a case of mistaken identity and the Russian mob.
– “The Long Kiss Goodnight” (1996) Having just remembered she’s an assassin, Geena Davis’ character and her daughter are locked in a freezer. Naturally, the former assassin uses gasoline to explode her way out.
– “Hollow Man” (2000) Elisabeth Shue’s character and her injured boyfriend are trapped in a walk-in cooler by her ex-boyfriend, an “invisible man” gone mad (Kevin Bacon). Fortunately she’s a scientist, so she can figure out a way to magnetically open the door.
– “The Blob” (1958) Even schlocky horror movie classics use freezers as plot devices. In this case, the two teenage main characters, one of whom is a young Steve McQueen, hide from the people-eating Blob in the walk-in cooler in his father’s grocery store. The Blob starts to ooze in and then leaves. This helps the teens figure out how to stop the Blob later.
