How to Keep Freezer Burn out of Your Walk-In Freezer

Don’t let freezer burn destroy the taste and visual appeal of your food—or ruin your reputation. Here’s how to keep freezer burn out of your walk-in freezer or cooler.

Check the Packaging

Freezer burn occurs when air seeps into frozen food and dries out its surface, causing those telltale white crystal patches. The food is safe to eat at this point, but it will often be tough and flavorless. Use foil, plastic wrap, or airtight containers to store frozen food, never glass, and make sure to fully wrap or secure the food before freezing.

Watch the Date

Frozen food doesn’t last forever. Make sure to label your items so you know how long they’ve been there, and keep a log of your food so you know exactly what you have on hand.

Keep It Cold

Your walk-in freezer must stay at zero degrees Fahrenheit, or ideally -10 to -20 degrees, to maintain food quality. If the temperature fluctuates, the food will go bad more quickly.

Check the Shell

A leak in the shell of the freezer can let in excess moisture, and so can an improperly sealed door. Both can cause further damage.

Don’t Overcrowd It

If the space is overloaded with items, it hurts the air circulation and the performance of the freezer. Placing items in front of the evaporator fans will cause the same problem.

Call for Maintenance

If evaporators are poorly maintained, the ice won’t melt and the water won’t drain properly, resulting in a strained compressor and fluctuating temperatures. Ultimately, undrained water can cause structural damage to the freezer.

With proper care and maintenance, your walk-in freezer or cooler will provide years of stellar service.
