Choosing the Best Used Walk-in Cooler/Freezer

If you need a new cooling unit, but your budget can’t handle the strain, it’s crucial to learn how to evaluate a used walk-in freezer or cooler. You can save significant money by choosing a pre-owned unit instead of buying a brand-new appliance.

Assess Insulation

Assess the insulated walls of the unit by tapping on them. You shouldn’t detect hollowness, and the walls should feel firm. Notice the panel seams, too. Optimally, no caulk should be visible at the seams.

Check the Door

The door into the unit should appear level and square within the opening. Hinges and hardware should be strong and in good working order. The gasket along the outside perimeter of the door should not show signs of wear or cracking. The self-closing mechanism should be operational.

Evaluate the Metal

Take a close look at the metal panels of the walk-in freezer. Stainless steel, stucco, or embossed metal indicates a higher-end product. Look for rust, pitting, or corrosion, which are signs of galvanized steel (a lower grade metal). Optimal metals will have a painted or clear coating, which makes it easier to maintain the unit and keep it clean.

Note the Interior

The inside of the unit should have a light in working condition. The door should release from the inside for safety. Look for approval stickers on the inside of the door panel indicating UL and NSF inspection and approval.

Evaluation that turns up issues in any of these areas could indicate a lower quality walk-in freezer or a unit with potential issues.
